Cycle the Solway takes place on Sunday 29th September. Cycle on flat bike friendly roads through a unique corner of Cumbria. Choose either 25km, 50km or 100km routes. All three routes start and finish at The Border Reiver Pub in Carlisle. All monies raised go to the Eden Valley Hospice.

·         100km route – The route heads west from The Border Reiver Pub in Carlisle towards Abbeytown in the same direction as stage two of this year’s Tour of Britain. The ride then heads towards Allonby and then up the coast road to Silloth. The riders then head back towards Abbeytown and then north towards Kirkbride where they will then complete a loop heading through Anthorn, Bowness on Solway and Burgh by Sands before heading back to the finish at The Border Reiver Pub.

Cycle The Solway

Our intrepid route meister, Ian Dixon, was out and about surveying the route last Sunday. In fact he cycled round the 100k course but started and finished in Longtown, totaling 155k on the day. He has obviously benefitted from the high altitude training in the Spanish mountains last month. The Scott Self Storage riders, Stephen, Ian and Luke will undertake the 100k route on July 23rd.

We have organised a feed station at the Wheatsheaf Inn in Abbey Town for the 100k route. You will pass this on both on the outward and return trips. The landlords, Val and Mike are putting on a special cyclists lunch at a special rate. There will also be a gazebo in the garden with water, bananas and flapjack.

There is also a feed station situated in a lay by east of Bowness on Solway (water, bananas, and flapjack), toilet facilities, provided by Leets Loos are avalable here. Finally, similar arrangements are available at Moorhouse in the garden of the Royal Oak, where mine hosts Charlotte and Nick Sowerby will be pleased to welcome you.

For your information the flapjacks are very generously donated by the Dalston Bakery.

Please send your registration forms as soon as possible. You can download a registration form from http://www.scottselfstorage.co.uk/cyclethesolway.asp . This will enable us to e mail a sponsoship form so that you can persuade your family, friends, and colleagues to part with their hard earned cash. An alternative means of donating is on our just giving site you can find the link at http://www.justgiving.com/cyclethesolway .

Please check, and service your bikes to avoid potential breakdowns.

Our next newsletter will be after the organisers ride with a course report and some photographs (sun permitting).

If you would like anymore information on how to take part, how to donate or how you can help in any other way, do not hesitate to email info@scottselfstorage.co.uk or phone 01228 524411.

BBC Article 'The Self Storage Craze'

6.10.11

It was brought to my attention that the BBC had written a rather negative article on self storage. The article can be read in full in the link below.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-14718478

There is a point which Tom de Castella & Kate Dailey have made which I would like to comment on.

"newspapers have found horror stories where people have forked out thousands of pounds to keep their possessions in storage for years on end, despite never visiting the warehouse to take them out."

Every person who uses self storage is made aware of the costs involved before they sign a rental agreement. If they want to fork out thousands of pounds using self storage that's their choice, I wouldn't describe it as a 'horror story'. If the customer doesn't want to visit their goods, they don't have to - it's their choice. As long as the customer is made aware of the costs before the agreement is signed, that's all that matters.

This is a quote from storagejunkie in the comments section:
"Self storage is used for many reasons - moves, break ups, lack of space. We help UK businesses by providing affordable space especially in the start up process. Most in the NW are old factories and warehouses that have been renovated and not 'new monstrosities'. We also give space to charities, often free to help their cause and help with fundraising. Storage is a solution to an expanding country."

Even though 10-20% of self storage customers are from the business sector and the majority of domestic customers are house movers using storage for 6-8weeks it seems that some members of the media seem to think that self storage is becoming "a worry for society. People are using valuable land in prime areas of overcrowded cities like New York and London to build these warehouses, spending money on renting the units and in the process accumulating more and more stuff."

To summarise, storagejunkie hit the nail on the head. Storage is a solution to an expanding country.
